Not Just Entertainment

When most people think of potty training a cat or kitten, they think of something silly you would see in a movie or web video. One of the most famous that comes to mind is the scene in the movie "Meet the Parents" when the cat not only uses the toilet but flushes as well. This concept is not as silly as you may think. Many people have successfully potty trained their cat using things they have at home or buying kits available to aid in potty training your cat.

Kits Available To Purchase

There are a variety of kits available to purchase. One that was featured on daytime talkshow "The View" is called the "Citikitty". If features a thin tray you place under the toilet rim and fill with litter. Every few days or weeks, whatever works for you and your cat, you cut out a ring exposing some of the toilet bowl below. Once all four rings are removed your cat is used to doing it's business above the toilet water and standing on the rim and the tray can be removed permanately. Another similar product is the "Litter Kwitter" which is also available for purchase. It features colored removable rings to slowly get your cat used to going in the toilet.

Making Your Own Potty Training System

Of course as with many things, you can make a DIY potty training kit fairly easy. Simply using a large bowl works for some if you can find one that fits correctly and are willing to sacrifice it to the inside of you toilet bowl. Lift the seat, place the bowl inside and fill it with litter. Remove the bowl weeks later once you think your cat has the hang of it. The tricky part of this is that there's no slow way to introduce your cat to the water below. Some people find it helpful to first put their normal litter box on a chair or box higher up so the cat gets used to jumping onto something before it potties.
